Mojacar
Mojacar has been a hidden gem of the Spanish Coast. Why? Because of its position. When the rest of Spain was booming in the 1960's and 70's, Mojacar was undiscovered. It wasn't until Almeria Airport opened that it became easily accessible.
A swift drive from the airport can get you in Mojacar in 50 mins, but a more casual drive and you are there in an hour. Granada Airport is 2 hours, Alicante is 2 Hours and Murcia is one hour fifteen minutes.
Mojacar could be split into two distinct areas, the pueblo (village) and the playa (beach).
Mojacar Playa boasts 10 kilometres of uncluttered sandy
beaches, dotted
with Chiringuitos (Beach bars), shops, restaurants and even
Children's Play
areas. Set back from the beachfront are residential
properties, many which
offer spectacular views out over the Mediterranean Sea.
Mojacar is still very
popular with Spanish tourists, especially during the height of
the season,
The beauty about the playa is that the local council have prevented local builders building any hotels or properties more than 4 floors high. This encourages a consistent theme throughout the resort. Allowing properties a few roads back from the playa still getting substantial views of the sea.
Development is also hampered by the mountains immediately behind the resort. So it can never become a high towered resort. Because of these restrictions the popularity of Mojacar remains high, especially for holidaying Spaniards.
The pueblo is beautiful, from
two aspects. Firstly as seen from a distance, the village looks
magnificent. Secondly, once in the village there are several areas
you can pause to take in the views back down to the sea and along
the coast. The village is typically Spanish with narrow streets.
Some of the village is car free, especially during the summer months
and during the market day. There are many shops and cafe/bars to
browse through and rest at during your visit.
Many are not aware that the Costa de Almeria is the warmest and sunniest region in the whole of Europe, (15 miles inland and you have Europe's only official desert area) so it is no wonder this location is fast becoming a sought after area! With over 320 days of sunshine a year, it is hardly surprising that this region is becoming a very popular place to both live and visit. The Costa de Almeria is conveniently situated on the south eastern Mediterranean Coast and is easily accessible from the airports of Almeria & Murcia.
Mojacar, Almeria, Spain
